Athletes are People Too

BYU ChiropractorAthletes can appear superhuman with their extraordinary physical abilities–track and cross country runners can endure velocity and distance like the speed of light; swimmers are probably growing gills with their impeccable ability to exist under water for extended periods of time; tennis players can potentially break concrete with a ball and raquet. Despite their robust physical facade, athletes are human too. They’re capable of physical injuries because the human body can only endure so much and has a breaking point–but rest assured that your Chiropractor is here to help. Dr. Laney Nelson and Dr. Tyler Nelson has worked with all the athletic programs at BYU. Dr. Laney Nelson, the first BYU Chiropractor, has been excelling at his job since the 80s.

What you may not know about Athletes and Chiropractic

BYU ChiropractorWhether you participate in sports or not, when you have an injury that leaves you with chronic pain, you know that chiropractic can help.  But did you know that even young, healthy athletes benefit from the help of a chiropractor?  Dr. Laney Nelson and Dr. Tyler Nelson of Camp4 Human Performance work with all of the athletic programs at BYU; in fact, Dr. Laney Nelson was the first chiropractor to work in the BYU athletics department and has been there since the 1980s.  Both doctors know that athletes can’t perform to their maximum abilities without the help of a chiropractor.

Although we think of young, strong athletes as being impervious to injuries and pain, they aren’t.  In fact, the body takes a lot of punishment in most sports.  Football players, runners, soccer players, wrestlers and other athletes are prone to many types of injuries including:

▪ Strains and sprains.   Acute sports injuries, like broken bones, do happen but the majority of sports-related injuries occur in muscles, tendons and ligaments.  When a joint is twisted or overextended leading to tearing of muscles or tendons, it’s called a ‘strain.’  When ligaments are torn, it’s called a ‘sprain.’  Ankles, knees and even the vertebrae of the spine can be injured by tearing.

▪ Tendinosis.   Tendinosis or tendinitis occurs when a joint is overused and can result in pain and dysfunction.  The tendon becomes inflamed from repetitive use.  Rotator cuffs in baseball pitchers can become inflamed as can the elbows of golfers and tennis players.

▪ Stress fractures.   Stress fractures are also called fatigue fractures and they happen when an abnormal amount of stress is placed on a bone.  This can happen to runners who accelerate their training too quickly.  Another form of stress fracture is shin splints, which are microfractures on the front surface of the shin bone.

A chiropractor can not only treat athletes who’ve suffered performance-related injuries, they can also help to prevent injuries.  Pre-emptive manipulation and adjustment of the spine can help athletes to maintain their spinal alignment and balance, which means they’ll be less likely to injure themselves.  But sports chiropractors don’t just manipulate or ‘crack’ spines, they also work with muscles.  Using techniques like myofascial release, positional release, Graston and more, they can reduce tightness in muscles and improve blood flow, which leads to better performance.

If you are an athlete and you want to get yourself in top condition before you compete, or you’ve suffered a sports-related injury and you need help, call us at Camp4 Human Performance at (801) 829-9500.  You can also visit us at www.camp4chiropractic.com to find out more about the services we provide.

6 Things you may not know about Chiropractics

Taylorsville UT ChiropractorsTaylorsville UT chiropractors can help you with many of your medical complaints using a variety of tools and techniques.  If you don’t know a lot about chiropractors and what they do, you should know that their main goal is to relieve your pain and to restore your range-of-motion so that you can function and enjoy your life.  But that’s not all you should know about Taylorsville UT chiropractors and chiropractic treatment.  Here are 10 things you should keep in mind about chiropractic and your body:

1.  Chiropractic goes beyond treating pain.   Pain is simply the end result of months- or even years-long muscular or skeletal dysfunction.  When you go to traditional medical doctors, they will prescribe pain killers regardless of whether or not they can diagnose the cause of your pain.  Unfortunately, pain killers simply mask a problem that will persist until it’s treated.  Chiropractic can treat the root cause of pain.

2.  Your bodily functions and malfunctions originate at your spine.   Every system in your body is connected through the nerve system that emanates from your spinal cord. When transmission from these nerves to your intestines or your brain or your toes is disrupted because the surrounding spinal column isn’t moving correctly, you can experience problems in places on your body that you may not think have anything to do with your spine.

3.  Athletes use chiropractic to perform better.   While athletes see chiropractors to treat injuries, they also use chiropractic treatment to prevent injuries because chiropractors are movement specialists.  They can also help to speed recovery from an injury and improve balance and coordination.

4.  You play an important role in healing.   Taylorsville UT chiropractors can only do their jobs; they can’t do yours.  If you’ve been treated by a chiropractor, chances are that he’s given you exercises to do or a diet to follow to help maintain a healthy, more functional body.  And because many physical ailments that chiropractors treat are the end result of months or years of dysfunction, it’s very easy for you and your body to fall back into the habits that contributed to your problems in the first place.

5.  You won’t have to see your chiropractor indefinitely.   Even though adjustments and many other chiropractic treatments will make you feel great, you likely won’t want to have to schedule appointments for them for the rest of your life.  This is a common myth.  Your chiropractor wants to treat the problem you present to him.  That can mean a few visits for initial treatments and then occasional visits in the future to check on your condition.

6.  Chiropractic adjustments don’t hurt.   They just sound like they should.  The cracking or popping sound that an adjustment of your neck or back makes is the result of gasses being released from the joint capsule.  The anticipation of pain is what causes the most anxiety in new patients; but the adjustment itself is just a quick, direct thrust to a specific spinal bone.

If you’re experiencing chronic pain or difficulty moving, call one of the best Taylorsville UT chiropractors, Camp4 Human Performance at (801) 829-9500 or visit www.camp4chiropractic.com to schedule an appointment.  Dr. Laney Nelson and Dr. Tyler Nelson work with all of the athletic programs at BYU – Dr. Laney Nelson has been with BYU since the 1980s and was the first chiropractor to work with their athletes.

Choose your Chiropractor Wisely

Taylorsville UT ChiropractorsIf you’re trying to choose among Taylorsville UT chiropractors, it can be difficult to decide which one is right for you and provides the kinds of services you need.  Like every other kind of medical service, the place to start is with your health insurance.  If your health insurance covers chiropractic treatment, they will have a list of chiropractors in your area to choose from.  Armed with that list, you can ask your friends, family, coworkers and your family physician if they have any recommendations.  If you get more than one recommendation for a particular chiropractor, chances are that person is competent and reliable.

Bear in mind that all of the Taylorsville UT chiropractors are different, not only in the way they approach chiropractic care but in the types of services they offer.  So, it’s important that you visit the office of any doctor you’re considering – with or without recommendations from others – to find out more about them.  When you make a personal visit to the doctor’s office before you make and keep your first appointment for a diagnosis, you’ll be able to get a general feeling for the professionalism, courtesy and competence of his staff.  You can ask which types of services the doctor offers and what his training is.

Many people feel uncomfortable asking in-depth questions but a good chiropractor won’t be bothered by questions; in fact, he will even encourage them so that you are completely informed before you start any kind of treatment.  You may end up interviewing several chiropractors before you choose one who’s a good fit for you; but since you are seeking medical treatment from someone who may end up manipulating your spine, being picky is a wise move.

The most important things you need to know, in addition to whether or not he accepts your medical insurance, are how he will diagnose your medical problems, if he offers more than one type of chiropractic technique and if he’ll tell you upfront how many procedures he’ll have to perform to get the desired results.  In fact, this is one of the red flags of chiropractic treatment – doctors who tell you that they recommend a long-term treatment plan of sometimes 6 months to a year, during which you must see them a set number of times per month.  Good Taylorsville UT chiropractors are usually able to get good results for you in much less time than that.

If you’re ready to get help for your aching back, call us at Camp4 Human Performance at (801) 829-9500.  Our doctors come with the highest recommendation – Dr. Laney Nelson and Dr. Tyler Nelson are trusted by and work with all of the athletic programs at BYU and Dr. Laney Nelson was the first chiropractor to work for the university.  You can find out more about both doctors at www.camp4chiropractic.com.

How a Chiropractor in Taylorsville UT can help you Heal

Chiropractor Taylorsville UTFinding the right chiropractor in Taylorsville UT can be the difference between enduring the pain you’ve been dealing with, and finally being able to move on from it. There are so many attributes of our daily living that can lead us to physical pain, and that pain really does interfere with how we live our lives. There are many different ways to deal with that pain, but when that pain is the result of neuromuscular problems, then the person you want to see is a chiropractor. They have the training and experience necessary to help you get back to living without pain.

Chiropractors are medical professionals who specialize in the treatment of neuromuscular problems. This means that they treat problems that a person might be having with their muscles, or the nervous system triggering those muscles. Typically chiropractors deal with these problems through the manual adjustment and manipulation of the body, typically around the spine. When the spine is in alignment, the rest of the body is able to come into alignment around it, and that alignment reduces pain. Usually when something is out of place with the bones of the spine, the muscles and nerves around the spine are injured because of their misplacement, and the body feels pain. Sometimes the pain might be felt, not around the spine, but in the legs or arms, but the pain will still be the result of the problems around the spine. These issues are what a chiropractor in Taylorsville UT tries to correct.

Being treated by a chiropractor in Taylorsville UT is one of the most common ways that people today deal with their neuromuscular problems, because chiropractors are so effective. The trick to getting treated by a chiropractor is finding the right one to help you deal with your pain. You want a chiropractor with enough experience to help you get past the problems that you’ve been having so that you can be restored to better health. When you want a chiropractor who knows what they’re doing, you want Camp4 Human Performance. Dr. Laney Nelson and Dr. Tyler Nelson have spent years working with the athletic programs at Brigham Young University, giving them extensive experience in a multitude of neuromuscular problems. That experience enables them to give you some of the best treatment available, and to get you back to healthy living as soon as possible.  Learn more about them and the services they can offer you at http://camp4chiropractic.com.

Climber Friendly Chiropractor in Taylorsville UT

Chiropractor Taylorsville UTNot many things in this world can compete with the awesome beauty of a sunrise seen from the side of a mountain. Few things in this life will stretch your endurance the way that rock climbing will, but for those that adore the sport it is endlessly rewarding. From Zion National Park to Logan Canyon, Utah lays claim to rewarding climbing and bouldering opportunities. Yet when taking advantage of these sights there is more to worry about than falling. Repetitive and stress injuries are a bane to professional and ameteur climbers alike. Avoiding them is the best way to ensure that your love affair with the sport can be life long. Choosing an expert chiropractor in Taylorsville UT can keep you in tip top shape, as they work to treat and diagnose your ailments.

The pros at Eastern Mountain Sports list finger injuries as some of the most commonly occurring, and this is not surprising given the role that our hands play in the sport. The ligaments and tendons that make the finger work, can be easily damaged. These parts of the finger are highly susceptible to tears, especially when crimping. If you foot slips or your weight shifts in just the wrong way, your fingers will be bearing the entire weight of your body, which is not desirable. Prevention is the best weapon against the acute setbacks of climbing. Healing can be lengthy, as the individual gradually works back up to full strength. A professional chiropractor in Taylorsville UT can always be consulted if needed. Especially if there is concern that the injury is not healing as it should.

Some climbing injuries develop over time. Long term issues are often caused by poor body mechanics or overuse. Knowing when to stop and understanding the proper way to position your body and carry your weight, is crucial to safe and rewarding adventuring. Don’t ever ask more from your body then it’s able to give, or attempt routes beyond your abilities or endurance. If you do find yourself suffering from joint swelling or tendonitis, or pain in your back neck and arms, seek professional help. Letting chronic injuries worsen without the proper treatment is the fastest way to end your climbing career. these types of injuries rarely go away on their own.

If you have a love for rock climbing, and are looking for a healthcare professional with similar ideals, you need to take the time to stop by Camp for Human Performance. This local chiropractor in Taylorsville UT has a passion for health, and a love for community. Dr. Tyler Nelson  is a youth competitive climbing team sponsor at Momentum Climbing Gym, where he offers on site medical evaluation and diagnosis to keep his team in perfect working order. His love of human wellness and service shows in the care that he provides.  Call (801) 829 9500 today to schedule a consultation and discover how this chiropractic team can improve your function, and keep you performing the activities that you love.

Is Acupuncture an Effective Treatment for Migraines?

Acupuncture Taylorsville UTMillions of people deal with chronic pain of some sort on a daily basis. For some, that chronic pain is in the lower back or the neck. For others, the pain resides in the joints. And for some, chronic migraines are a serious problem. Generally, migraines are considered chronic if they last for four hours or longer and occur at least 15 days a month. Can acupuncture in Taylorsville UT be a solution for chronic migraines? Some people say yes!

In clinical trials, acupuncture is an effective treatment for migraines. [1] Here’s how it works: Hollow needles are shallowly inserted into the skin. They can be placed essentially everywhere on the body, but for migraine treatment, needles may be placed in these areas:

  • Across the forehead
  • On the temples
  • Above and below eyebrows
  • On the back of the neck
  • On or in the ears
  • Behind the ears

What Results Look and Feel Like

The most obvious way to determine if acupuncture in Taylorsville UT is an effective treatment for migraines is to see if the headaches go away. For many people, this change doesn’t happen overnight. It may take a day or two for the full effects to take place. It also may take a couple of acupuncture treatments. But for others, all it takes is one acupuncture session.

The first sign of migraine relief is the eliminating (or at least the lessening) of tension. As tension subsides, the contracted muscles are able to relax. The sensitivity to light becomes more manageable and the throbbing dulls down.

Why It Works

Acupuncture needles are hollow, and the belief is that tension, negativity, stress, and anxiety are released through the center hole. Specific breathing exercises and patterns are part of an acupuncture treatment, which also improves relaxation. Acupuncture is safer than most drugs, including prescription and over-the-counter varieties.

Acupuncture in Taylorsville UT is effective in treating migraines and the symptoms that accompany them. It has been proven to reduce nausea [1] which is often a side effect of chronic migraines. If you are looking for an alternative treatment for migraines, consider acupuncture. Just go in for a few treatments and see what kind of results you see.

Acupuncture Needles vs. Regular Needles

Even the most sensitive people can make peace with acupuncture needles. They are hollow and have a tiny circumference, so it is not some huge needle being inserted into the skin. Acupuncturists also only stick needles just barely into the skin, and needles never reach veins. There generally isn’t any blood involved if the acupuncturist is experienced. If you are afraid of needles but have always wanted to try acupuncture, give it a try. The acupuncturist may suggest trying a small area, like the ears or forehead, to test your sensitivity levels.

Give acupuncture a try if you are tired of dealing with chronic pain and/or migraines. It may be the perfect solution for you.  Call Camp4 Human Performance at (801) 829-9500 today!
